New plan for traffic improvement

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, (NITT) and the police have brought out a Geographical Information System-based traffic improvement plan for the city.

The plan has been brought out by the Civil Engineering Department of the NITT after a study based on a request from the city police.

The objective was to compile digital data of the road network map of the city, to study the existing the existing traffic control measures, accident data and come up with appropriate recommendations.

According to M.Vijayalakshmi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), the study has focussed and identified six major areas for improvement – provision of parking lots, pedestrian pathways, traffic signals, road markings, black spots (accident-prone areas) rectification and encroachment removals.

The study has identified six major areas of heavy traffic congestion.

These included the tourist spots of Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple and the Rockfort Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple; the Mainguard Gate, Central and Chathram Bus Stand and Thillai Nagar.

In an effort to ensure smooth flow of traffic in some of the important junctions in the city, the study has recommended the redesigning of some of the huge traffic islands, which have been occupying a large space.
