Metro station to add to the beauty of Qutub

Staff Reporter

Station structure to look like a historical stone building

Will have a museum housing precious historical artefacts

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro station coming up near Qutub Minar on the Central Secretariat-Gurgaon route will be designed to ensure that the beauty of the heritage monuments surrounding it is not marred.

The station, which will be called the Qutub Minar Metro station, will be modelled keeping the heritage monuments around in mind and will also have a heritage museum at the entrance of the station, which will house precious historical artefacts.

“A 500 square metre area has been earmarked for the purpose, which will be an open court where artefacts of historical importance will be put on display. The open area is being designed in the pattern of a colonnade where the artefacts will be displayed symmetrically at fixed intervals,” said a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation official.

The DMRC will consult the Archaeological Survey of India for the arrangement and collection of artefacts, which will be put on display. The station will also offer passengers a clear view of the majestic Qutub Minar from within the premises. “The station structure will have the look of a stone building of the historical era. Clay and other earthy colours and tones will be given to the building so that it looks similar to the other historical monuments in the vicinity. Chiselled stones will be used for the construction of the station. While the station will be on the first floor, the concourse is being constructed on the ground floor. Part of the station structure rests on a rock while the other part will be elevated at about 6 metres above the ground,” the official said.

The façade of the station will be camouflaged with the rock structure on which a part of the station rests. The station is still under construction with 40 per cent of the civil construction work complete. “Work is in progress on the foundation, super structure and casting of slabs of the station. The Qutub Minar station is part of the Central Secretariat-Qutub Minar-Gurgaon corridor of the second phase of construction of the Delhi Metro. The stretch is slated to open in June 2010,” the official said. The Central Secretariat-Qutub Minar corridor is 12.53 km in length while the stretch from Qutub Minar to Gurgaon is 14.47 km.
