DHAKA: Bangladesh will hold the ninth parliamentary elections on December 29 instead of December 18. The new schedule was announced by Chief Election Commissioner A.T.M. Shamsul Huda on Sunday. The BNP-led four-party alliance demanded the election be postponed to facilitate its participation. The 14-party alliance led by the Awami League, which already nominated its candidates, criticised the EC and the government for conceding to its rival’s demand. It blamed the BNP-led alliance for prolonging the Emergency rule and delaying return to democracy by demanding rescheduling of the election. Mr. Huda also announced the new schedule for the ‘upazila’ elections, which would now be held on January 22. The EC, which has changed the poll schedule twice already, claimed the decisions were made to ensure an all-inclusive election.
