Letters to the Editor
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has advised the police and paramilitary forces to strengthen their intelligence mechanism and upgrade their training and weapons to combat terrorism (Nov. 23). There is no doubt that our security forces need to be better equipped. But the government should bear in mind that even the most powerful countries cannot tackle the menace with force alone. In India, every terrorist group has the blessings of one political party or group. It is therefore important to approach the issue from a socio-political angle. A.G. Rajmohan, Anantapur This refers to the report that the National Security Adviser has assured BJP leader L.K. Advani that the allegations of torture and abuse against the police made by Malegaon blast accused sadhvi Pragnya Thakur would be probed (Nov. 22). Governments have never extended such a gesture to Muslim youths arrested in connection with acts of terror and exonerated by courts. It appears that governments act only in response to high-pitched rhetoric. Salman Sultan, Azamgarh Does Mr. Advani know that hundreds of innocent Muslims are tortured in police custody across the country? What does he have to say to it as the Leader of the Opposition? Just as sadhvi Pragnya is important to the sangh parivar, every victim is important to his or her family. Abdul Hameed, Abu Dhabi
