3 minor girls rescued

Special Correspondent

Two are believed to be from Nepal

CHENNAI. Three minor girls, two of them believed to be from Nepal, who were brought by an agent for employment here, were rescued by the Railway Police on Saturday. The victims were handed over to ‘Childline’ authorities who sent them to the Government Reception Unit at Kellys.

According to police sources, the girls aged between 13 and 16 years were seen with Bommal Sardar (34) of Kolkata at the Central station. On suspicion, the Railway Police intercepted them and alerted Childline personnel. Preliminary enquiries revealed that the information given by the girls and Bommal Sardar was not matching.

The girls were produced before the Child Welfare Committee for investigation. “While the girls said they had come here for work, Bommal Sardar maintained that they were on a fun trip to Puducherry. He did not even know their names. Two girls claimed they were from Nepal,” P. Manorama, Chairman, Child Welfare Committee, Chennai, said.

On a complaint lodged by Dr. Manorama, police arrested Bommal Sardar. “If the information given by the girls is found to be true, we will hand them over to the Embassy of Nepal. Apparently, the girls had come here to work as domestic help in the Raja Annamalaipuram area. Employing children up to 18 years of age is a punishable offence under the Juvenile Justice Act,” she added.
