GURGAON: Mandip Antil struck the match-winner in the 54th minute as India Colts scotched the hopes of a fighting Western Railway 1-0 in a Pool ‘A’ super league match of the Jindal Steel 45th Nehru hockey tournament at the Nehru Stadium, here on Saturday. The Railway team defended hard and conceded only two penalty corners, making it difficult for India Colts. India Colts comfortably topped the group with three victories and will meet the second placed team from Pool ‘B’ in the semifinals. Punjab and Sind Bank defeated Heroes Club (Pakistan) 3-1 for its second victory in three matches and eventually finished second in the pool. It will meet the topper of Pool ‘B’ in the semifinals. Naginderjit Singh, Navpreet Singh and Gurvinder Singh Chandi scored the goals for the bank team, while Atif Baig reduced the margin for the Pakistan club towards the end. In Pool ‘B,’ Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) XI overwhelmed South Central Railway 5-2 after leading 2-0 at the interval. K.H. Jayanta Meitei (2), Rajdeep Singh, Amit Bhargav and Amarjeet Pratap scored the goals for ONGC. Prabhakar Singh converted a penalty stroke and Ashish Minz scored one in the 69th minute to lend respectability to the margin for South Central Railway. Both the teams have one victory each from two outings, but ONGC could fancy a better chance of grabbing a semifinals berth behind last year’s runner-up Bharat Petroleum which is sitting pretty with two wins from two matches. — Special Correspondent
