No protection for life in State, says Chandy

Special Correspondent

‘High Court says number of cases for police protection up’

Says courts had criticised the government on various occasions

“Unfair criticism of the judiciary will weaken democracy”

Kochi: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has accused the Left Democratic Front government of failing to provide protection to the life of people in the State.

Inaugurating a legal enrichment camp organised by the Indian Lawyers’ Congress (ILC) here on Saturday, he said the Kerala High Court had pointed out that the number of cases for police protection were on the rise. The government should not wait for the court to order protection.

Even after the court had given direction for police protection, the State refused to provide it.

Mr. Chandy said the court had severely criticised the government on various occasions for not acting within the parameters of the Constitution and the statutes.

Instead of criticising the judiciary, the government should take steps to rectify the mistakes pointed out by the court.

He said that unfair criticism of the judiciary would weaken democracy.

The previous United Democratic Front (UDF) government had resorted to constitutional methods whenever the court took it to task. Everyone should uphold the dignity of the judiciary.

The executive, the legislature and the judiciary should work in coordination and mutual respect. Faith in the judiciary would strength the democratic set-up.

T.P.M. Ibrahim Khan, ILC president, presided. K. Babu, MLA; UDF convener P.P. Thankachan; M.I. Shanavas, general secretary, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee; District Congress Committee president V.J. Poulose; and P. Parameswaran Nair, Assistant Solicitor-General; spoke.
