Congress to work for capturing power in State

CHENNAI: The Congress will work for capturing power in Tamil Nadu in 2011 and that is the aspiration of party workers, said president of its State unit K.V. Thangkabalu here on Saturday.

Addressing mediapersons after a meeting of the party’s election manifesto committee, Mr. Thangkabalu said every party would have an ambition to come to power and the Congress was not an exception.

“We are not running an ashram and there is nothing wrong in demanding a share of power in the State.” As it was a policy matter, it had to be decided by the party high command and the State unit would abide by it.

He ruled out any significance in meeting Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S. Ramadoss and said it was a routine meeting of leaders of alliance parties. The PMK was in alliance with the Congress and was part of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre. Mr. Thangkabalu said the election manifesto committee had met earlier in the State to discuss national and State level issues.

Issues to be included in the proposed manifesto were discussed at the meeting.

The committee would meet again and a draft manifesto containing items to be included in the national manifesto would be sent to the high command by December.

He said it was the AICC that would take final decision on including those issues in the national manifesto.

Jayanthi Natarajan, party spokesperson; former TNCC presidents M. Krishnasswamy and Kumari Ananthan; deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party D. Yesoda; and K. Jayakumar MLA were among those who participated in the meeting.
