Local bodies polls with EVMs possible in 2011

Staff Reporter

TIRUVANNAMALAI: It is possible to conduct local bodies elections with Electronic Voting Machines in 2011, State Election Commissioner D. Chandrasekaran said.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday after reviewing the conduct of the local bodies bypoll held recently in the district, he said only the byelections for urban local bodies were conducted with the help of EVMs. If EVMs were to be used in the local bodies polls, disputes could be avoided. “To conduct elections for 1.3 lakh local body posts with EVMs, we have submitted a Rs.200-crore proposal to the Tamil Nadu government. It is possible to conduct local bodies elections with the help of EVMs in 2011,” he said.

Mr. Chandrasekaran said action had been taken against 3,100 candidates of the last local bodies elections, who did not submit their accounts of poll expenditure in time to the commission. “In Tiruvannamalai district, action has been taken against 49 candidates.” He said 37 local body posts, including that of councillor and those of five panchayat presidents remained vacant in the district. Elections would soon be conducted.
