VIJAYAWADA: West Godavari defeated Karimnagar 27-24 in the men’s league fixtures of the 34th AP senior inter-district basketball tournament for men and women at the Sai Baba College grounds at Anantapur on Friday. Ranga Reddy scored its second win, defeating Vizag 30-7. The results (league) Men: RR bt Vizag 30-7; West Godavari bt Karimnagar 27-24; East Godavari bt Prakasam 26-2; Medak bt Nalgonda 45-29, Mahaboobnagar bt Srikakulam 24-11, Krishna bt Khammam 26-2. Women: Krishna bt RR 15-2; Kurnool bt Chittoor 13-6. VRSEC scoresVijayawada’s V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College (VRSEC) scored a five-wicket win over Ongole’s TSR Sarma College in the Acharya Nagarjuna University inter-zonal cricket tournament at Bapatla. VRSEC will meet Guntur’s JKC College in the semifinals on November 23. The scores: TSR Sarma College 103 in 34.5 overs (Jyothi Sai Krishna three for 16) lost to VRSEC 107 for five in 24.4 overs. SZ Varsity kabaddiThe South Zone inter-university kabaddi (men) tournament will be held at the Acharya Nagarjuna University from November 22 to 25 in which 39 teams will take part, said D. Suryanarayana, Organising Secretary, here on Friday. The Minister for Infrastructure and Ports, M. Venkata Ramana, will be the chief guest. Prof. Y.R. Haragopal, Vice-Chancellor, ANU, will preside over the inaugural function on Saturday. SAI scholarshipsThe Krishna District Sports Authority on Friday distributed Sports Authority of India scholarships for the year 2007-2008 to 20 sportspersons from the district for their exploits at the university and National tournaments. The recipients: G. Asha Jyothi, Netaji (ball badminton), D. Sai Srinivas, Kanuri Tejeswi, M.R. Lalith Babu (chess), Vineela Pachigalla, Y. Anusha (cricket), A. Hari Sai Kieran, B. Avinash, K.V. Suresh, V. Sri Soumya (gymnastics) — all received Rs. 8,400 each; J. Shiva Veerajaneyulu, J. Ganga Mohan (archery), Aswini Choudary (badminton), Durga Prasad, N. Sambasiva Rao, P. Srinivasa Rao, Peetha Srinivasa Rao, Venkat Siva Rama (ball badminton), J. Rama Rao (archery) — all received Rs. 10,200 each. Pat for NagamalleshThe Krishna District Sports Authority and Krishna District Gymnastics Association on Friday felicitated D. Nagamallesh, a Class X student of Samvida Vidya Peeth, for his selection in the Indian team to participate in the Tulit Teter Memorial championship to be held at Hungary on December 13 and 14. The SAI gymnastic coach, Ram Mohan, who took part in the Asian youth championship at Doha from November 15 to 18 as a judge, was also honoured.
