Firemen rewarded

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The team of firemen who rescued the two mechanics stranded on the mast of a floodlight at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk on Thursday were rewarded for their effort at a function on Friday at the office of the Director of Fire and Rescue Services here.

The mechanics were stranded on a makeshift lift that broke down after a cable wire snapped.

The mechanics, working on contract with a private firm in charge of the maintenance of the lights, were going up the 170-foot high mast to repair the floodlight.

The maintenance work was taken up as part of preparations for the one-day international cricket match to be held in the stadium on December 5.

The firemen had to work for several hours and it took a sky lift and two additional ladders attached to the sky lift to rescue the stranded men.

Fire and Rescue Services Director K.R. Shyamsundar said the sky lifts that the department had could reach a height of 42 meters.

The department had sought funds in next year’s budget to buy sky lifts that could reach up to 52 m.
