Biesse of Italy opens production unit in Bangalore

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Biesse Group of Italy, the world’s third largest maker of woodworking machinery and equipment for glass and stone cutting, has opened a plant here, investing euro 4.5 million. About 30 per cent of the computer controlled equipment made here is for exports to West Asia and other Asian countries.

Biesse Director Roberto Selci told reporters here on Thursday that “our strategy for the next three years includes spreading to markets such as North Africa, East Europe and China and the Bangalore plant will be an essential part of this.”

To ramp up production

Nearly 80 per cent of Biesse’s production for working on wood, glass and stone is exported. The group has planned further investment here to ramp up production.

In the next two years, the plant will make up to 280 units a year with capacity to scale up to 500 units.

Biese Manaufacturing (India) Chief Executive Officer Sayeed Ahmed said, “Over the past 18 months of assembly line production here, we have started sourcing components from local vendors. Around 70 to 80 per cent components are now locally sourced. Some of these are also being supplied to the parent company.”
