Hubli-Dharwad
Traditional beginning: Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar inaugurating the cultural programmes as part of Dharwad Utsav in Dharwad on Friday. DHARWAD: Dharwad Zilla Utsav began here on Friday evening with “naadageethe” by students of Dr. Mallikarjun Mansur Sangeet Shale after Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar inaugurated the cultural programmes by beating the “nagaari”. Speakers at the function cooperated with the organisers in completing the inaugural formalities by cutting short their speeches. Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain welcomed the gathering and Chairman of the Legislative Council Viranna Mathikatti lit the lamp. District-in-charge Minister Murugesh Nirani inaugurated “Abhivruddhiye Mool Mantra”, a presentation on development programmes of the Government prepared by the Information Department. What followed the presentation was a laser show, which enthralled the audience. Making the introductory remarks veteran poet Channaveera Kanavi said that it was time to realise that development of Kannada was complementary to the development of the State. Mr. Mattikatti, Mr. Shettar and Mr. Murugesh Nirani restricted their speeches to a few words. They said the utsav was being held to showcase the literary and cultural tradition of the region. Mr. Shettar said that he would urge Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to release more funds to the festival. Apart from the elected representatives, Vadali Brothers and Shehnai exponent Dayashankar participated in the inaugural ceremony. Cultural programmes were held later.
