Cancerous growth inside cheek removed
The patient has been chewing tobacco for 10 years GULBARGA: Ganesh Gurulingayya, 30, got a new lease of life after a team of doctors removed a cancerous growth inside his left cheek in a six-hour operation at Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital here a few days ago. The complicated head and neck oncosurgery was performed by senior surgeons Fahim Goliwala and V.S. Kappikeri. . Dr. Kappikeri told The Hindu on Thursday that on the same day, reconstruction of the affected portion was done using chest muscle tissue. The patient’s condition is said to be normal, and he is now undergoing radiotherapy at Siddeshwar Cancer Hospital in Solapur. According to Dr. Kappikeri, Mr. Gurulingayya can now open his mouth fully and take normal food. Mr. Gurulingayya, who has been chewing tobacco for 10 years, developed the cancerous growth inside his cheek six months ago. After failing to get appropriate treatment, he approached Dr. Kappikeri. Since the patient could not afford the surgery, Dr. Kappikeri got him admitted to Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital and requested Dr. Goliwala, an oncosurgeon, to conduct the operation. Basavaraj Bhimalli, president of the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society, which runs the hospital, and hospital superintendent Dilip Rampure offered the patient free treatment.
