SALEM: A team of Labour Department officials conducted raids in Salem city and its suburbs recently and rescued four children aged below 14, who were found employed in industrial units. The team raided over 50 commercial establishments including silver anklet manufacturing units, automobile workshops and welding units on Five Roads, Tiruvagoundanur Bypass, Sivadapuram, Panangardu, Vedukathampatti, Andipatti and Perumampatti areas. The officials found four children employed in silver anklet manufacturing units and rescued them. Steps were being taken to admit the children in the special schools. Efforts were on to initiate legal action against the employers of the children, officials said. A press release said the government had banned the employment of children aged below 14 years as domestic servants in houses and workers in hotels, restaurants, teashops, holiday resorts and other recreational centres, and industrial units. Moratorium The sago and starch producers have urged the State Government to announce a moratorium on recovery of loans availed by them from the co-operative and public sector banks. The State president of Sago and Starch Producers Association S. Duraisamy, in a press release, said the sago and starch industries were struggling to operate in the State due to various problems. The number of sago units had come down to 400 from 1000 in the recent past. The frequent power disruptions in the State had also adversely affected the operations in the existing units, he added.
