Overage issue haunts AFI

BANGALORE: The season-ending junior National athletics championship at Mysore seems to have sapped Athletic Federation of India (AFI) more than the athletes themselves.

Even five days after the completion of the event, the AFI is yet to come out with an official release for stripping Anoop P.K of Kerala, besides a few others related to overage problems.

Kerala’s Anoop had won the boys under-20 100m. But on the last evening the AFI took a decision to ban him for two years for being overage and G.N. Bopanna of Karnataka was elevated from his silver medal finish. This is clear going by the AFI website as well. But what one fails to understand is that if Anoop is found guilty in the individual event, shouldn’t his anchor leg in the Kerala quartet’s gold in 4x100m relay be stripped and Andhra upgraded?

And if the website is to be believed, then R. Rajesh, also from Kerala who was stripped and suspended for two years on the third day of the championship, still retains his place (silver) in the boys under-20 10000m.
