Brisbane: New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee reduced Australia to 23 for three, before the host was bowled out for 214 after being put in to bat, on the first day of the first Test at the Gabba on Thursday. New Zealand was seven for no loss at stumps. The 19-year-old Southee’s impressive spell of swing bowling yielded him four wickets for 63 runs, including that of Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich and skipper Ricky Ponting within the first eight overs of the Australian innings. The host’s only show of resistance came from Michael Clarke, who made 98 and added 54 runs with Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark for the last two wickets. Earlier he steadied the innings with a 73-run fourth-wicket partnership with Michael Hussey, before the latter was out leg-before to Chris Martin. Clarke showed patience and maturity, consuming 217 balls for his 98, with nine boundaries.
Andrew Symonds, making a comeback after being left out of the India tour due to disciplinary reasons, managed just 26.
