Sai Krishna grabs sole lead

Chennai: K.V. Sai Krishna of Vijayawada moved into sole lead in boys’ and Saranya of Chennai extended her lead in the girls’ section at the end of the ninth round of the VIT National Under-13 Chess Championships at Vellore on Thursday.

Third seed Sai Krishna overcame Deepthamsh Reddy with the black pieces in 52 moves to take his tally to eight points from nine games. He leads by half a point with two rounds still to go.

The second place is shared by top seed Sahaj Grover (Del), Shiven Khosla (Mah), Fenil Shah (Guj) and Vishnu Sharon (TN) on 7.5 points. Among players tied for the sixth place is FIDE Master Girish Koushik of Mysore, the former World Under-10 champion.

Deepthamsh won a pawn with a discovered tactic in the early middlegame that emerged from a king’s Indian defence. His exposed king gave Sai Krishna compensation.

Sai Krishna patiently defended and counterattacked to win a rook.

Top seed Sahaj lost a couple of pawns and drew in 37 moves after second seed Shiven Khosla of Mumbai failed to find the precise way to convert the material in the queen ending.
