Left parties seek house sites for poor

VISAKHAPATNAM: CPI and CPI (M) workers in large numbers, led by their leaders commenced a 48-hour ‘maha dharna’ in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday. This is a part of the State-wide joint agitation of the parties demanding house sites for the eligible poor.

CPI State secretary K. Narayana participated in the dharna.

Dig at government

Addressing the dharna participants, Mr. Narayana criticised the government for not allotting house sites for the poor and alleged that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was engaged in real estate business by allotting large areas of lands to private companies.

The poor families were being neglected and deceived in all respects. The Rajiv Gruhakalpa houses were being constructed away from towns and cities to keep the poor out and subject them to discrimination while the lands of fishermen, SCs, STs and BCs were being taken away in the name of SEZs, Costal Corridor and other projects, Mr. Narayana said and asked the government how much land of higher caste people was acquired so far.

CPI (M) district secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao, other party leaders -- K. Lokanadham, A. Ajay Sarma, B. Ganga Rao, R.K.S.V. Kumar, Botta Eswaramma, R. Bhagya Lakshmi-- CPI district secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, corporator A.J. Stalin, Ch. Raghavendra Rao, and others participated.

Police force was present to thwart any untoward incidents. Traffic was diverted as the dharna participants occupied the road in front of the Collectorate.
