KOCHI: The United Democratic Front councillors of the Kochi Corporation have put up pressure on the civic administration by making the Works Standing Committee Chairman K.M. Hamsakunju resign from the post.

Mr. Hamsakunju submitted his resignation to the Deputy Secretary of the Corporation on Thursday.

The attempts of the civic administration to make the Standing Committee Chairman responsible for its failure is deplorable, said Mr. Hamsahsakunju in a communication.

The criticism was unjustifiable as the LDF had six members in the 10-member Standing Committee. The civic administration was desperately trying to shield itself against the scathing criticisms made by the High Court, he said.

“Factional feud”

Mr. Hamsakunju said he had sought permission from the party to resign from the post on the day on which the court had made the observations against the civic administration.

The UDF Parliamentary Party leader, A.B. Sabu, said that the attempts of the ruling front to blame the Works Standing Committee Chairman for the failure of the administration was unacceptable.

The standing committee was the only committee headed by the UDF in the council and he cannot be made responsible for the failure of the administration, said Mr. Sabu in a statement.

It was the factional feud in the LDF that affected the civic administration and the nominee of the Congress should not be held responsible for that, he said.

Councillors meet

The Parliamentary Party meeting of the Congress councillors will be held at the DCC office on Friday to give shape to agitations against the civic administration.

The UDF had picketed the Corporation office on Monday demanding the resignation of the Mayor following the criticism from the High Court.

The meeting of the Corporation council to be held on Saturday is likely to be a stormy one as the UDF has decided to bring up the issue at the council meeting, according to UDF sources.

The CPI (M) district committee had observed that the Congress agitations against the civic administration were a politically motivated one. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party district secretary Gopi Kottamurikkal had sought people’s support for solving the civic issues.
