Equally talented: Special children taking part in the 12th Inter-District Schools’ Sports and Cultural Competition held on Thursday. HYDERABAD: There was excitement in the air and so was impatience. For over 500 children gathered at the Sarojini Cricket Academy, Thursday was different from their routine. Students from 26 organisations and special schools working with the mentally-challenged showcased their talent at the 12th Inter-District Schools’ Sports and Cultural Competition, convened by Aathmeeya Manasika Vikasa Kendra (AMVK), a voluntary organisation with pioneering work in the field to its credit. Hyderabad Collector Navin Mittal said such events gave an opportunity to the children to display their creativity and talent. He congratulated the academy for its endeavours for special children. The Director, Vigilance and Security, APSRTC, Inspector-General of Police, B.L. Meena, likened the children present to ‘stars’. “These are our own tare zameen par,” he said. Nirmala of AMVK appealed to the Collector for allocation of land and monetary assistance for the academy. The Rotary Club donated two wheelchairs to the academy and also provided snacks for the participants. Children took part in different sports events such as 100-metre, 200-metre and 250-metre race, throw ball, etc.
