Arts and culture provide inspiration to corporate leaders: Klaus Schwab Crystal Award is to integrate cultural leaders into WEF annual meetings
Mallika Sarabhai
AHMEDABAD: Bharatanatyam danseuse and director of the Ahmedabad-based Darpana Academy Mallika Sarabhai has been selected for the “Crystal award for 2009,” given by the World Economic Forum, for her two decades of work in the fields of women empowerment and social justice as well as arts and culture.
The award will be presented during the summit meeting of the Forum in January in Davos, Switzerland. She will address the gathering and also give a dance performance.
In his letter to Dr. Sarabhai, WEF chairman Klaus Schwab said arts and culture played an important role in the transformation of society and were essential in raising “consciousness to our sense of purpose, vision and fulfilment and provide inspiration to the corporate leaders. It was because of these reasons, that the WEF had incorporated the Crystal Award (A Swiss mountain crystal) to integrate cultural leaders into the annual meetings.”
The award was instituted in 1995 to pay tributes to the “decisive role which culture and art play in the creation of global understanding and peace.”
