Snowfall in Himachal; rain in Haryana

Shimla: Winter knocked at the doors of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday with the higher reaches witnessing snowfall and the town and other places receiving rain, which brought down temperatures by about 5 degrees Celsius in the hill State.

The famous tourist site of Kufri on the outskirts of Shimla registered 6 cm snowfall since Wednesday night, Met office said

Reports of snowfall have also been received from Rohtang Pass, Kalpa mountain peaks and Chitkul and Sangla in Kinnaur district.

A report from Lahual & Spiti district said due to the snowfall on the 3978-metre high Rohtang Pass, State road transport buses stopped going to Keylong from Thursday.

A report from Chamba said the famous hill station of Dalhousie received its first spell of snowfall of the season.

The Sach pass, which links the Pangi valley to Chamba, and is situated at an altitude of 4,413 metres has been closed to vehicular traffic due to heavy snowfall.

The region is now cut off from the rest of the State.

Chandigarh: Rain lashed many parts of Haryana and a few places in Punjab early on Thursday, with minimum temperature dipping by few notches.

Light rain lashed Chandigarh during the night and the minimum temperature here settled at 12.6 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological Department said. In Haryana, Ambala was lashed by 3.9 mm of rain and the minimum touched 11.9 C while Hisar was lashed by heavy rain at 11.5 mm.

Karnal was also lashed by heavy rain at 14.2 mm and the minimum there settled at 14.4 C. Narnaul and Rohtak were lashed by rains at 7 mm and 15.3 mm of rain and the respective minimums were recorded at 12.5 C and 13.2 C. Bhiwani received 11.2 mm of showers and the low there settled at 14.2 C.

Panchkula, Kalka, Kurukshetra and Sonepat also received light showers.

In Punjab, Ludhiana and Patiala received light showers and the respective minimums recorded at these places were 11.2 C and 13.1 C.

Amritsar had a cold night registering a low of 9.2 C.

The Met attributed the change in weather to a Western Disturbance over north Pakistan and neighbourhood and to an induced Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation over central Pak and north-west Rajasthan. They have forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places in Punjab and northern parts of Haryana over the next two days. PTI
