Staff Reporter

Public meet also planned to highlight fishermen’s problems

VISAKHAPATNAM: A rally and a public meeting are being organised by Keratam Network, an association of fishermen, to highlight the problems of traditional fishermen in connection with the World Fishermen’s Day on Friday.

Addressing a media conference in this connection on Thursday, Keratam convener Sk. Ismail and representative Teddu Shankar said that Keratam Network was formed to sensitise the government and the officials on the problems of fishermen. They said it was unfortunate that fishermen, whose source of livelihood was the sea, were not having any right on the coast or the sea.

Of late, big business houses were eyeing the coast to establish their industries and successive governments were displacing fishermen from their villages. They demanded immediate withdrawal of G.O. No. 373, giving rights to traditional fishermen on the coast and coastal villages, cancellation of the PCPIR project and continuation of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) policy.

An exhibition, highlighting the travails of fishermen at sea, the injustice being done to them and other aspects of their life, would be held on the occasion.

A memorandum would be submitted to the District Collector after the public meeting.Convener of Forum for Better Visakha E.A.S. Sarma would participate as chief guest in the public meeting.

District Fishermen’s Youth Association leader Arjilli Dasu and District Traditional Fisherfolk Federation leader Chodipalli Demudu were present at the media conference.
