Delay in four-lane work troubles road users

Inconvenience: The delay in completing the four-laning of National Highway-7 between Salem and Namakkal has been causing hardship to road users.

SALEM: Vehicle users who frequently take the National Highway-7 to travel between Salem and Namakkal are put to untold hardship due to the slow progress of the four-lane work between the two towns.

The road witnesses huge traffic every day as the two districts are home to a large number of poultry farms, starch and sago industries, heavy engineering workshops and lorry body building units. Thousands of people working in these establishments regularly travel on the road.

The establishments use the road to transport raw materials, agriculture produces, finished goods, eggs, starch and sago products, feed and engineering goods.

Heavy vehicle traffic between the two towns is huge as goods are frequently transported between the establishments and railway goods sheds in Salem.

But the slow progress in the four-lane work on the 42-km stretch, taken up by the National Highways Authority of India several months ago, has left people and the establishments to face difficulties.

Huge craters, potholes and semi-finished stretches give a nightmarish experience to the vehicle users.

“The work is progressing very slowly and our pleas to expedite it fell on deaf ears,” people said.

Denying the allegations, an NHAI official said the project was progressing as per the schedule. It was planned to open a part of the completed stretch before December 15. The entire work would be over by the end of February.
