Difficult times: Farmers are forced to wade through South Pennai river as there is no bridge across it. –

KRISHNAGIRI: Farmers in and around Thippanapalli and Kooliyam panchayats are forced to wade through South Pennai river with the harvested paddy as there is no bridge.

K.M. Ramagounder, State vice-president, Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam told The Hindu that he had submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, V.K. Shanmugam, demanding a bridge over the South Pennai river.Even for basic needs people have to cross the river to reach Krishnagiri or Royakottai, he said.

Since the river is never dry, carrying patients to hospitals has become a major problem. Ponni rice is being cultivated on more than 5,000 acres in this area. Paddy harvested has to be taken as headloads through this river.

Over 15, 000 people are living at Ombalakattu, Ammaneri, Savulur, Kooliyam, Sembadamuthur, Ennakalpudur, Ottampatti and other hamlets. All of them have no other option but to wade throught the water for any of their basic needs. Just three months back a woman from Kummanur was swept away in the floodwater when she was trying to cross the river. Her body was fished out from Madhepatti, 3 km away from her village. Such incidents are not rare, say villagers.
