Staff Reporter

ERODE: The district police have formed teams to investigate recent crimes, Deputy Inspector General of Police P. Sivanandi has said. Addressing journalists at a meeting at the District Police Office here on Thursday, he said the district police had formed seven teams at divisional level and a team at the district level to look into crimes that took place in the recent past.

The Erode district police have recorded eight chain snatching in November 2008 and 32 since the January 2008. The police have also recorded dacoity, robbery and theft cases across the district and in Erode city in the recent past. In short, as per police figures, there has been a nine per cent increase in crime.

Terming the rise in crime as "not alarming but a cause for concern," the officer said the increase in population and floating population, improved communication and transport facilities were the reasons for the rise in crimes.

He also said that the Erode police had a crime detection rate of 60 per cent, which would be improved to 80 per cent.

To prevent crime, Mr. Sivanandi said the police would go in for ‘visible policing’, by posting policemen at important locations to discourage criminals from committing crimes.

On the district police’s order mandating vehicle users to carry documents in original, he said the police would carry out the checks without inconveniencing the road users, and added that the drive would carry on till stolen vehicles are detected.
