Police reach out to people through ‘Makkalai Nokki’

ERODE: The Coimbatore range police, in an effort to reach out to the public, have introduced the ‘Makkalai Nokki’ project in Coimbatore and Erode districts. According to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range, P. Sivanandi, under the project, which means towards people, policemen in Coimbatore and Erode districts would first rush to the scene of crime without insisting upon the complaint to visit the station to lodge a complaint.

“In any case, the police visit the scene of crime. So we thought we would as well direct policemen to first go to the spot without waiting for a complaint," the officer said, adding that at the scene of crime they would get a complaint.

“We don’t want the complainant to visit police station for even getting an FIR copy. He or she can lodge a complaint with the policemen who visit the scene of crime, and the personnel, after registering the complaint, will door deliver the first information report (FIR) copy,” he said.

And, if the complainant wanted to visit the police station, he or she was welcome to do so.

At the police station the police would treat them with dignity and provide all assistance, for which instructions have been given to all the stations.

Mr. Sivanandi said the aim of the project was not only to reach out to the public but also sensitise the police personnel to public grievances. “A few complainants consider getting an FIR copy a big achievement. We want such a perception changed.”

Regarding the traffic situation in Erode, the officer said policemen were studying accident-prone places and the time of accidents.

A report would soon be ready, based on which measures would be initiated to bring down the number of accidents.
