Irrigation package proposed

NAGAPATTINAM: A Rs. 3.5-crore package for development of lift irrigation systems that feed over 8,000 acres in the district has been proposed to the government, District Collector M. Jayaraman said here.

Power pumps with generators were installed in the 1960’s in 12 places in the district to provide irrigation facilities to elevated areas. About 8,042 acres in Vilunthamavadi, Umbalacherry, Tagattur, Velankanni and Ayakkaranpulam among other places benefited from this system.

However, when Mr. Jayaraman inspected the pumps, he found that many were not in a good condition. Following complaints of water scarcity for irrigation this year, he announced that the power pumps would be repaired at the earliest.
