Traffic police say it with flowers

Roses for fines: Traffic police giving a rose to a woman riding a two-wheeler without a helmet in Mysore on Thursday.

MYSORE: The city traffic police instead of slapping fines on motorists for breaking traffic rules decided to give roses and request them not to flout the rules here on Thursday. They asked the motorists to be a partner in the effective management of traffic in the city, which is witnessing a boom in the number of vehicles.

As part of a three-day drive to spread traffic awareness among the public, the traffic police came up with the idea of discouraging those who flout traffic rules by presenting roses to them. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Crime) Jawaharlal inaugurated the traffic and road safety awareness drive.

The police personnel, who had brought along a basketful of roses, were seen presenting them to motorists at the busy K.R. Circle with smiles on their faces. They had a special request for persons riding two-wheelers: to wear helmets.

It was pleasant surprise for motorists and autorickshaw drivers when they encountered the traffic police in this unusual role. Persons wearing helmets, were stopped at the circle and given roses. They were requested to persuade their friends to wear helmets as well.

In addition to roses, they presented pamphlets containing traffic rules and guidelines. Separate pamphlets were presented to auto drivers and other motorists. The pamphlets had dos’ and don’ts for all types of vehicle users.

The police said that traffic rules should be respected since accidents and traffic jams occurred due to lack of road sense. They also spread traffic awareness in other important circles and junctions.
