Child workers rescued

Staff Reporter

SIVAKASI: Eight child labourers, working in an offset printing unit here, were rescued by a team of officials on Thursday. Among them five were girls and three were boys, aged between 13 and 15 years.

The team, led by Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, A. Srinivasan, and Project Officer, INDUS Child Labour Project, A. Maria, raided three units. Ms. Maria said that eight child labourers, along with a 16-year-old girl, were rescued from a unit in Ammankoilpatti.

All of them were elementary school dropouts. Efforts were on to put the children in INDUS schools.

Stating that the 16-year-old girl too was interested in studies, Ms. Maria said that she would be given vocational training.
