No dearth of talent in State: official

BERHAMPUR: Young weight lifters of the State came together to clash their might at the State School- level Weight Lifting Championship held in the city on Thursday.

Boys and girls of different weight categories from all over the State took part in this power sport championship. There was major presence of lifters from Puri, Ganjam, Khurda, Mayurbhanj districts where weight lifting still exists as a traditional sport among the youth. The lifters selected from this tournament would take part in the National School Weight Lifting Championship to be held in Patiala in Punjab from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2.

The boys event of the tournament continued till late evening. But in the girls’ events the lifters of sports hostel, Bhubaneswar excelled in several weight categories. Some of the top lifters in girls’ events were Minati Das, Sania Behera, Paramila Kisani, Saswati Raut, Kiran Digal, Subhra Das, E.jena etc.

Taking part in the inauguration ceremony , the deputy director of sport, Nilamadhav Nanda said there was no dearth of talentamong the school students in the State despite the dearth of infrastructure. It may be noted that at the 44th junior weight lifting championship held in Imphal, the boys’ team from Orissa had become the runners’ up. K. Ravikumar of Ganjam district had been adjudged the best weight lifter of the tournament.
