In classical mould: A two-day exhibition of paintings by C.N. Premkumar at Durbar Hall Art Centre was a unique experience for the discerning art lovers in the city. KOCHI: It was a brief encounter for the discerning art lovers of the city. The two-day exhibition of paintings by C.N. Premkumar at Durbar Hall Art Centre was timely though the general feeling was that it should have been on for some more days. R. Gopalakrishnan, former secretary of the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, inaugurated the show at a brief meeting in which Madhu Eravankara, filmmaker, was present. Some of the selected paintings of Mr. Premkumar, who is a practising advocate at Tiruvalla were on show. He is preparing for the big event in Dubai next month and the full talent will be on show, away from the Kerala shores, opines Mr. Premkumar. Mr. Premkumar’s mystic colouring techniques in oil and acrylic paints are liberated endeavours quite shifted from the usual styles. His own “rain drop style”, “feather touch” blending of colours, ‘puffing technique’ which eliminates the stroke effect in painting all combined to form visual aesthetics to its extreme heights. His paintings are of various themes and motifs ranging from folklore to tantric, abstracts to realistic. He never uses a palate to blend colours. Different colours are directly applied on the canvas and blended by various techniques of brush and knife. Most of his works are spontaneous reflection of images of nature and folklore. The painting style some times challenges photography.
