V.S. Achuthanandan: the package will be implemented soon.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has welcomed the Union Cabinet decision to approve the agriculture package for Idukki.

The package prepared by the Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Commission will help solve the agrarian crisis in Idukki district to a large extent. Steps to implement the package would be taken as soon as the details of the Cabinet decision are received, he said.

He recalled that the government and Members of Parliament had pressed the Centre for granting the package, as Alappuzha and Idukki had not been included in the Vidharbha package. Following this, agriculture scientist Dr. Swaminathan was appointed to prepare packages for reviving agriculture in Idukki and Kuttanad. Detailed project reports are being prepared for the Kuttanad package that was approved earlier, he said.

A substantial part of this would be submitted to the Centre this week itself.
