Former Speaker acquitted

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has acquitted former Assembly Speaker R. Muthiah, his sons Arivazhagan and Manimaran and daughter Malarvizhi in a disproportionate wealth case.
The charge against Mr. Muthiah was that he amassed wealth to the tune of Rs.45.74 lakh, which was “disproportionate to known sources of his income.”
In 2000, a Special Court here convicted and sentenced the former Speaker and his sons to 25 months rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs.5000. Ms. Malarvizhi was sentenced to one year RI and a fine of Rs.25,000.
Challenging this, the four preferred an appeal.
In his order acquitting them, Justice S.K. Krishnan said that investigation was not done properly. The prosecution had failed to bring home the guilt of the accused beyond all reasonable doubt.
