175 students pledge to uphold ethical values Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award instituted BANGALORE: The students of Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore organised a candlelit march in honour of Manjunath Shanmugam on his third death anniversary on Wednesday. It was on November 19 three years ago that Manjunath, an IIML alumnus who was a sales officer for Indian Oil Corporation, was shot dead by oil mafia after he sealed the Mittal Automobile Petrol Pump at Gola, about 50 km away from Lakhimpur. Over 175 students pledged to uphold ethical values in their daily lives to ensure that their actions were transparent and to promote the welfare of the people. Akhil, a batch mate of Manjunath at IIM Lucknow, recalled how the latter was known for his dedication and integrity. The murder spurred members of the large IIM alumni network to form the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust to improve governance in Indian public life. The trust set up the first RTI helpline and also instituted the Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award which recognises those who uphold the values of truth and honesty in India. Raghavendra, Manjunath’s brother, was present at the event. Students who are members of the Rotaract Club of Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research took part in a march from their institution at Electronics City in Manjunath’s memory. Students from various other B-schools such as Symbiosis, ISBR, CDAC, IFIM and XIME participated.
