TIRUCHI: The city police on Wednesday foiled an attempt by an armed gang of seven to commit dacoity in the house of an aged couple at K.K. Nagar by arresting all the seven members.

The gang, which had come in a car bearing a Karnataka registration number to the house of Jamal Maideen (65) along Rajaram Salai in the wee hours, scaled the compound wall.

They then allegedly threatened Jamal’s son, Abbas.

Abbas, who resides at Bheema Nagar, was staying with his parents on Tuesday night, the police said.

Upon noticing the gang, Abbas alerted the police control room over the phone.

The control room in turn flashed the message to a police team led by Inspector Raghupathy which was on night patrol.

The team surrounded the house and rounded up all the gang members who included Murugavel (33), who was earlier Jamal’s driver.

The gang had planned to eliminate the couple and decamp with cash and jewellery. The other arrested were Srinivasan (35), James (22), Anand (22), Bhaskar (24), Santhiyagu (23) and Ganesh alias Vijayganesh (22).
