New-born found dead in a drain

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A just-born baby boy was found dead, wrapped inside a polythene bag and in a drain on Thiru Vi.Ka. Street in Pallavaram on Wednesday evening.

According to residents, one of them had noticed the tiny hands of the infant protruding from the bag in the drain. As information spread, dozens of residents came to the spot.

Residents informed personnel at Pallavaram police station at 7.30 p.m. Even by 9 p.m., residents complained to journalists that no policeman from the station had arrived.

Even as residents were contemplating a spontaneous protest, a police team arrived.

Police said that they were investigating on whether the infant was washed along from somewhere else or if someone had thrown the bag at the spot in Pallavaram. Police were making enquiries at nearby government and private clinics about deliveries they had attended to on Wednesday evening.
