SCR knocks out Indian Oil

GURGAON: Railway teams continued to play havoc with the calculations of the organisers, as South Central Railway put out former champion Indian Oil 3-0, for a berth in the quarterfinal league in the Jindal Steel 45th Nehru hockey tournament at the Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday.

K.K. Bharath, Bikramjeet Singh and Nitin Kumar scored the goals in that order for SCR.

It may be recalled that Western Railway had got past Namdhari XI from group ‘D’.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) XI pipped Air India, 4-2 in the tie-break after the teams had locked 1-1 at the end of regulation period and extra-time.

Baljinder Singh, Harpal Singh, Bikas Toppo and Amit Bhardwaj converted their chances while only Vikram Pillay and Prabodh Tirkey were successful for Air India, with Arjun Halappa and Sandeep Singh failing.

Earlier, Harman Singh had put ONGC ahead in the fourth minute, while Sandeep Singh had equalised for Air India with a penalty corner strike in the 45th minute.

Defending champion Punjab and Sind Bank, runner-up Bharat Petroleum, Lahore XI and Bangladesh XI have been given direct entry into the quarterfinal league.
