Karnataka consumes 120 million units of power a day Only a small part of renewable energy is harnessed Bangalore: The power crisis in the State which is hitting rural areas the hardest, could in part be eased by renewable energy, said V.P. Hiremath, Managing Director of Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. (KREDL). “Karnataka consumes 120 million units of power a day. Bangalore alone accounts for 50 per cent of the demand, while rural areas receive less than four hours of electricity a day,” said Mr. Hiremath at the Annual Prestige Environmental Seminar organised here on Tuesday by Maini Group and Loughborough University, the U.K. “Some of the peak hour demand could be met by renewable energy such as wind and solar,” he added. Karnataka is one of the country’s leaders in solar and wind energy and in small hydro projects. However, statistics reveal that only a small fraction of the potential of renewable energy in the State is harnessed. While the combined potential of wind, biomass, small hydro and cogeneration is 17,386 MW, the projects commissioned generate only 1,957 MW. Delivering the Annual Prestige Lecture on “Advances in renewable energy and sustainable transport,” Simon Watson, Senior Lecturer, Wind Power Systems at Loughborough University, said that the U.K., being the windiest country in Europe, is harnessing wind energy and hopes to generate 25 GW in 20 years. Rob H. Thring, head of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering at Loughborough University, said that at a time when there was a consensus that global warming was a result of human induced environmental changes and the emission of greenhouse gases, “there is no reason to wait to convert to renewable energy”.
