Congress celebrates Indira’s birth anniversary

HYDERABAD: The 92nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was celebrated with fanfare by the Congress party on Wednesday.

At a function got up in Gandhi Bhavan, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the AP Congress Committee president D. Srinivas garlanded the portrait of former Prime Minister.

Addressing a gathering of Mahila Congress workers, Dr. Reddy said the Congress government was emulating the former Prime Minister and implementing welfare and developmental programmes. He said with the inspiration of late Indira Gandhi, the government was marching ahead on the path of development. Mr. Srinivas said women empowerment received a fillip in the present regime. He pointed out that when the Congress party rode to power in 2004, the Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu said the thrift group movement would vanish.
