PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam has appealed to the Union government to take immediate steps to ensure the 15 fishermen from Karaikal were released by the Sri Lankan Navy. In a letter to Union Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee, the Chief Minister said the fishermen had ventured into the sea from Sellanthan, Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu on November 17. “I shall be grateful, if you could kindly take up the matter with the Government of Sri Lanka and arrange for the release of the fishermen,” Mr. Vaithilingam said in the letter. Officials in the Chief Minister’s office said, Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar, who is in Delhi, had conveyed the government’s concern about the safety of fishermen to Union Minister for Home Affairs Sivaraj Patil. Opposition Leader A. M. H Nazeem, who represent Karaikal Assembly segment, appealed to the government to seek the Union Government’s intervention to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future. The government should take all steps to get the fishermen released at the earliest, he told reporters.
