Mechanisation key to paddy farming: MP

Staff Reporter

Says ensuring food security is important to protect the freedom of the country

‘Government agencies and padasekhara samithis should buy machinery to help farmers’

‘Rs.15 crore being spent in the district this financial year for paddy cultivation’

PALAKKAD: N.N. Krishnadas, MP, has said that farm mechanisation is the only way to carry forward paddy cultivation in the district.

Inaugurating paddy cultivation under the National Food Security Mission at the Kavilpad Panamthodi Kalam (farm) near here on Wednesday, he said: “Since there are only marginal farmers in Kerala after the implementation of the Land Reforms Act, a farmer cannot buy a tractor or other machinery for cultivation. So, government agencies and padasekhara samithis should buy machinery to help farmers.”

He said that to mobilise funds for mechanisation, the padasekhara samithis should be converted as cooperative societies to get loan and subsidy from banks and government agencies.

He said that ensuring food security was of vital importance to protect the freedom and security of the country. “Since food self-reliance is required for food security, farmers should be given special privileges.”

Collector K.S. Sreenivas delivered the keynote address. P.B. Vinod, Deputy Director, Agriculture, presented a report on the National Food Security Mission project.

He said that an amount of Rs.15 crore was being spent in the district this financial year for paddy cultivation.
