Police arrest gang involved in murders
Staff Reporter
Tiruvannamalai: A gang allegedly involved in at least three murder cases in the district was arrested by the special police teams.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police V.Balakrishnan said that the prime accused Raja alias Speed Raja (28) native of Mangalam village near Tiruvannamalai was allegedly involved in three cold blooded murders. The other members of the gang are: G.Chinnamanai of Chethnampalayam in Villupuram district, Vimalraj and Settu of Puducherry, Kumar alias Selvakumar and Ashok alias Rajaram of Ambathur, Chennai. Police are on the look out for another key accused Kumar alias Uthayakumar of Arakkonam, the SP said.
The leader of the gang Raja’s modus operandi was to take a cab for hire and kill the driver in a secluded place and rob the vehicle. Following the murder of Gingee-based taxi driver Mubarak at at Pulivai village near Vandavasi last month, special police teams were formed. Police personnel including inspector T.Subramanian have sustained injuries when Raja attacked them when he was rounded up at Thenniluppai Village near Vandavasi. Raja, Chinnamani, Vimalraj and Settu have confessed to the murder while Kumar and Ashok were held for helping the gang, Mr. Balakrishnan said.
Raja is also allegedly involved in the Killing of Kancheepuram based taxi driver Sagayaraj in an identical fashion at Sorakolathur near Tiruvannamalai last September and killing of an 8-year-old boy for ransom near Kalasapakkam in 2006. Telephone numbers of several cab drivers are found in Raja’s cellphone seized by the police. He is suspected to have planned to kill those drivers one by one and rob their vehicles, the SP added.
Mr. Balakrishnan presented rewards to the members of special teams.
