Laudable effort: Appreciation certificate being presented to a teacher guide. PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 41 research papers were submitted by 205 students of different schools at the district National Children’s Science Congress – 2008 held at Arulmigu Prahadambal Government Higher Secondary School here recently. The Science Congress was jointly organised by the Tamil Science Movement and the Rotary Club of Pudukottai Kingtown with the objective of imbibing scientific temper and research in the present day younger generation. Authoris of six research papers were selected to participate in the State-level Science Congress scheduled at Nagercoil from December 5 to 7. The research papers on the topic ‘Sensitivity: Periyar Nagar people about the menace caused by non-segregation into bio-degradable and non bio-degradable domestic solid waste’ (presented by the students team of Vairams Matriculation Higher Secondary School); on ‘Preventing the wastage of power’ (by the students of Kamaraj High School, Aranthangi); on ‘Bio-medical waste management’ (by the students of SFS Matriculation Higher Secondary School); on ‘Modern techniques used in power production’ (by the students of PUMS School, Veppanpatti); on ‘Earth: protecting the nature’ (by the students of Ulagappar HSS); on ‘Repercussion of using plastic’ (by the students of Panchayat Union Middle School, Sunthampatti) were selected for the State-level meet. The president of the Rotary Club of Kingtown, G. Perumal distributed prizes to the authors of the research papers selected for the State meet and also to their teacher-guides. The district secretary of the National Children’s Science Congress, C. Govindasamy spoke elaborately on the role played by the Science Congress in motivating the young minds towards scientific research. The coordinator of the Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, R. Rajkumar, Principal of the Little Flower Teacher Training Institute, C. Baliah and lecturer from DIET, M. Mariappan acted as the judges and selected the best papers. The district president of the Science Congress, A. Manavalan, its coordinator, C. Sethuraman and others offered felicitations.
