Tirupur: Traffic diversions for prolonged period in Tirupur city owing to lack of proper planning and inordinate delays in carrying out bridge works have been causing enormous strain on oil pool reserves and also resulting in huge financial losses to the government.

This was revealed by a pilot study conducted by a group of five students of Frontline Academy Matric Higher Secondary School, Tirupur.

The students had observed that the Highways Department should have adopted pre-cast technology, construction of a new bridge adjacent to the present one or built a temporary bridge till the completion of actual project to avoid diversion thus saving considerable amount of fuel.

R. Srinithi, team leader, cited the example of 60 feet-long Sankalipallam Bridge recently built along Tirupur - Dharapuram road in lieu of a smaller bridge to substantiate the views. “The structure has been demolished completely, instead the officials could have gone for construction from one side allowing free flow of traffic along other side,” she told The Hindu.

Due to the resulted diversion, buses and other transport vehicles from the Old Bus Stand heading for Dharapuram, Palani and Madurai regions had been forced to travel an excess of about two km. to join Dharapuram road.

Extra fuel

“This has resulted in an average additional fuel consumption of 1,752.2 litres a day by about 9,750 vehicles that pass through the stretch every day,” Ms. Srinithi said.

Since the project got completed 18 months behind the schedule, the loss due to extra fuel consumption stood at a whopping Rs. 5.75 crore.

“At a time when the fuel reserves are depleting, the loss is unexplainable,” the students observed.

Based on these findings, the students are now appealing to the Highways Department to take a pragmatic stance while establishing the bridge coming up at Kasipalayam at Rs. 2.75 crore in lieu of the causeway.

“If deviation is implemented as planned, 7,115 vehicles passing through the stretch on a day will have to traverse an additional four km to travel between Kangayam and Uthukuli roads,” Ms. Srinithi said.

The students pointed out that since adequate space was available adjacently, a new bridge looks a viable solution while the existing causeway could be used for passage till the construction was completed.
