Sri Lanka should have announced aid for Tamils: L.Ganesan

Special Correspondent

“No political significance to Rajinikanth-Advani meeting”

CHENNAI: The Sri Lankan government should have announced welfare measures for Sri Lankan Tamils while attempting to tackle terrorism in the island-nation, Bharatiya Janata Party State president L. Ganesan said on Monday.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Mr. Ganesan termed unacceptable the position of Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa that the government wanted to eliminate Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam before initiating negotiations for a political package.

The BJP leader said he would not agree with the comparison of the Sri Lankan issue with Bangladesh as the latter was an example of the two-nation theory’s failure.

If Sri Lankan Tamils were keen on coming to India as refugees, the Centre should allow them, Mr. Ganesan said.

On the violence on the campus of the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, the BJP leader wanted a comprehensive study of the functioning of the college. Political leaders should treat the issue without regard to caste considerations.

On the meeting actor Rajinikanth had with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani last week, Mr. Ganesan said there was no political significance to be attached to the meeting.

Referring to the recent incident of coastal erosion at Tiruvottriyur and Ennore near Chennai, he wondered why rubble mound sea walls had not been built in the areas, which were among the worst-hit in the 2004 tsunami.
