50 tonnes of rice seized

KOCHI: The Kochi Customs seized more than 50 tonnes of rice meant for export from the container pre-stage area of the Cochin Port Trust on Tuesday.

The Director General of Foreign Trade had banned export of rice (non-Basmati varieties) from April as a measure to control inflation. The company exporting the rice from Kochi had declared the consignment as coconut and had hidden the rice between packages of coconut.
