Chennai: Several buildings on Thyagappa Street in Korukkupet were demolished on Monday and Tuesday, as part of the land acquisition for a vehicular subway proposed in the locality.
The High Court recently dismissed petitions seeking to quash a government notification for acquiring the petitioners’ lands for a subway near the Korukkupet railway level-crossing. The subway project is to be taken up by the Corporation and Southern Railway. The Corporation had initially envisaged the subway project to be a package of seven bridges planned in different parts of the city.
As the project required heavy land acquisition, it was decided to take it up as a separate one.
