Kneading it right: Students of Lady Andal Higher Secondary School try their hands at baking a cake in their school on Tuesday. CHENNAI: Students of Lady Andal Higher Secondary School, Chetpet, were all excited to learn a new lesson on Tuesday not with textbooks, but with flour, sugar and cream. Cakes ‘N’ Bakes which has a chain of bakery outlets in the city, conducted a demonstration of the art of baking as part of its silver jubilee year celebrations. Thirty higher secondary students tried their hands on a skill completely new to them and managed to bake delicious cakes within two hours. They were all ears when Cakes ‘N’ Bakes general manager Gautam Nichani gave tips about the right mix and perfect kneading for fluffy cakes and crisp breads. The students brushed up their knowledge of arithmetic, biology and even learnt the art of hair dressing in the demonstration. Several of them went on to knead variants of the bread from garlic to cheese braid bread. A few teachers also dropped in to catch a glimpse of the session and jot down the recipes. Mr.Nichani said “We wanted to share our 25 years of experience in baking and cake making with the society particularly the students. If the demonstrations inspire at least some of them to take up hospitality or catering as career, it means success to us.” Cakes ‘N’ Bakes also plans to conduct similar demonstrations in government higher secondary schools as part of their silver jubilee year celebrations, he said.
